Sygnia MDR detected and contained a live exploit only six hours after public disclosure.
Overview
On October 24, 2025, a critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-59287) affecting Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) was publicly disclosed. Within hours of its release, Sygnia’s threat detection platform identified active exploitation attempts targeting a client’s production environment.
The swift detection and response prevented what could have evolved into a major data compromise

Containment
Threat contained after client validation
Detection Method:
The attack was detected through Sygnia’s behavioral analytics rule titled “Sequence Of Encoded Commands”, which identified anomalous encoded PowerShell activity associated with WsusService.
exe—a process typically not executing user commands. A Sygnia MDR security analyst quickly correlated this alert with a public proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for CVE-2025-59287 that had surfaced hours earlier, confirming active exploitation.
Containment:
Containment actions were executed within 10 minutes of detection, with a brief delay for client validation due to production sensitivity.
Incident Response Engagement
Due to the novel nature of this exploit, the case was escalated to Sygnia Incident Response to:
- Conduct deep forensic analysis for persistence
mechanisms or backdoors - Validate that no data exfiltration occurred
- Provide hardening recommendations and
patch validation - Improve detection coverage for future PoC-based
exploitation attempts
Key Takeaway
This incident underscores the criticality of real-time detection and rapid containment in the hours following CVE disclosure.
The combination of Sygnia’s proactive threat detection capabilities and our MDR security analyst’s expertise enabled the client to neutralize an emerging exploit just six hours after disclosure— well before most organizations began patching.
While threat detection is critical, the ability to rapidly correlate anomalous activity with the latest threat intelligence is crucial for proper triage actions.
Outcome
- Exploitation stopped within minutes of initial execution
- No evidence of data loss, lateral movement or persistence detected
- Client WSUS infrastructure fully remediated and patched
- Improved detection tuning for CVE-based exploitation behaviors
